(hypopigmentation)

English Version

The Lesson of the Senduduk Flower

This morning, I went for a hike as the second day of my deep detox journey.

Along the way, I was fascinated by a cluster of purplish-pink flowers—the largest ones I saw on the hills today. They have a graceful name -Senduduk.

They seemed to smile at me with an extraordinarily sweet and serene posture, so I paused to say hello.

It made me wonder how they could look so joyful despite having a lifespan of only 24 hours. They will fade tonight, and a new batch will bloom tomorrow.

I truly believe everything comes into this world with a purpose. For these flowers, their purpose is to reproduce by attracting bees to collect and spread their pollen, creating more "Senduduk." They live beautifully for just a single day and night, truly existing in the moment.

It struck me then:

  • What is the true meaning of life?

  • Should a happy life naturally have a longer span?

Meanwhile, does a longer lifespan automatically mean a happier life?

I realized that while we cannot control how long we live, what matters most is living fully, excelling completely, and experiencing everything deeply—all with the purpose of helping more people and making the world a better place.

What an insightful lesson Senduduk has given me.

The plant in your photo is ***Melastoma malabathricum***, commonly known as the **Singapore rhododendron** or **Senduduk**. Despite its common name, it is not related to true rhododendrons.

Here is some interesting science behind this plant:
### Key Characteristics

 * **Distinctive Leaves:** The leaves are easily identified by their three prominent, parallel veins that run from the base to the apex.

 * **Bristly Stems:** The stems are reddish and covered in small, rough, bristly scales.

* **Flowers:** The vibrant purple/pink flowers are short-lived, often lasting only a single day. A fascinating botanical detail is their **heteranthery**—they have two different types of stamens, which is a specialized evolutionary strategy to ensure effective pollination by bees.

* **Fruits:** The fruits are technically berries that, when ripe, crack open irregularly to reveal a soft, dark blue/purple, sweet-tasting pulp filled with numerous small orange seeds.
### Ecological & Scientific Significance

* **Pioneer Species:** This plant is considered a "pioneer species," meaning it is one of the first to colonize disturbed areas like wastelands, roadsides, or land that has been cleared.

* **Phytoremediation:** *Melastoma malabathricum* is known as a **hyperaccumulator of aluminum**. This means it can absorb and store high concentrations of aluminum from the soil in its tissues, making it a subject of interest for phytoremediation (using plants to clean up contaminated environments).

 * **Traditional Uses:** In Southeast Asian traditional medicine, various parts of the plant (especially the leaves and roots) have been used for centuries to treat conditions ranging from wounds and skin ulcers to digestive issues like diarrhea and dysentery. Modern scientific research is currently exploring its potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties due to the presence of secondary metabolites like flavonoids and tannins.

(La m Tsuen River)

Today, Tai Po gave me the perfect peaceful escape!

It was my first time swimming in the sea in over 10 years, and my very first time swimming at Tai Po Beach.

I completely broke my own record! I initially thought I would just take a quick dip in the water and then sunbathe. Instead, I ended up swimming for much longer, enjoying the sun, and chatting with my son in the sea. After the swim, I felt incredibly light and refreshed—and I slept so much better last night!

There is actually a beautiful science behind why ocean swimming feels so therapeutic. The magnesium in seawater and the rhythmic sound of the waves naturally lower stress, while the sunshine boosts Vitamin D and helps regulate melatonin, setting the body up for a deeper, more restful sleep.

EGO AND SUFFERING

Ego can kill and heal us,

It is our choice to use our ego to kill to heal ourselves.

My reflection while studying the Buddhist wisdom (AI translation - Here is a translation of your reflection, capturing the gentle and introspective tone of your original text)

I Am Not My Ego

When you say, "I am not my ego," you are not denying yourself; rather, you are making a gentle yet firm claim of your true self. Let’s break it down:

First, the ego lives in "time," while you live in the "now."

The ego constantly pulls you back and forth between past wounds and future fears. It whispers, "You failed like this last time," or "You’re going to ruin everything next time." But the true you lives only in this single breath. When you take a deep, slow breath, you are instantly checking out—no longer identifying with the character drifting in the torrent of time, but returning to the shore, grounded and quiet.

Second, the ego’s mantra is "I am right," while the soul’s secret whisper is "I might be wrong."

At the core of all stress lies a rigid "I think." The more you cling to a certain viewpoint, expectation, or self-image, the stronger the ego grows and the sharper the stress becomes. But when you gently say to yourself, "I might have missed something," you haven't lost anything; you have simply laid down your armor. Once the armor loosens, physical tension and labored breathing are no longer "my suffering," but merely energy in motion. And flow is the beginning of dissolution.

"I am not my ego"—this is not just a slogan; it is a personal expedition.

Next time we feel overwhelmed, stressed, or afraid, let us stop. Take a few deep breaths, pause for a moment, give the body a rest, and create space for the soul.

Feel your feelings—the anxiety, the fear, the panic—and how your body reacts to them, such as pain or difficulty breathing.

Once we connect with them, recognize them, and listen to them, all those feelings and pains will gradually dissipate and melt away.

We do not own our thoughts, nor do we own our emotions. They come and go; this is natural.

When we detach from the ego's grip and stop clinging to our thoughts and emotions, saying to ourselves, "I might be wrong," our emotions transform into awareness, clarity, and peace.

When the "self" dissolves, compassion naturally arises.

We then truly connect with our inner strength, and the stress simply fades away with it.

Ego can kill and heal us,

It is our choice to use our ego to kill to heal ourselves.

Ego is not me. Thoughts are not me
Gratitude, and don't take anything for granted
Compassion: Step to others' shoes

EGO V. S. SUFFERING

Why do we suffer so deeply in life? The answer often lies in our ego. The ego constantly craves recognition, control, and validation, creating endless conflict inside and outside of us. In this video, we explore why your ego is the real source of suffering and how you can break free from its grip. Through Buddhist wisdom and mindfulness practices, you’ll discover the path toward inner peace, compassion, and true freedom.

If you’ve ever felt trapped by overthinking, anger, jealousy, or fear of judgment—this teaching will help you see clearly and let go. The moment we understand the illusions of ego, suffering begins to dissolve, and life opens into peace and joy
